Taneyev: The Twelve Choruses - Partsongs on Poems by Polonski
Netherlands Chamber Choir
GLO 5197 - 8711525519701
After two immensely successful Poulenc releases, another recording with the Netherlands Chamber Choir, internationally acclaimed as the best of all international choirs, this time with the haunting 12 Choruses Op. 27 by the great Russian composer Taneyev, written on poems by Polonski whose works were set to music by so many other great Russian composers, Tchaikovsky (Taneyev's lifelong friend) among them.
As a composer, Taneyev was a completely independent figure in late 19th century Russian music, who set new standards as a choral composer by breathing new life in to the great 17th and 18th century traditions of Russian music. The Netherlands Chamber Choir is led here by the Estonian conductor Tonu Kaljuste, who succeeded Uwe Gronostay as chief conductor of the ensemble at the beginning of their 1998-99 season.
